SHUT IN

I was very gripped by the script and imagery of SHUT IN. The evil pinned to the wood by a screwdriver as well as Jessica's wounds was very compelling to me (the cross), as well as the brutal struggle for Jessica to overcome her past & save her children.  The imperfect apple made more than perfect was also beautiful.  I would like nothing more than to create a score worthy of these themes.

I think the music should combine the emotional impact of a Max Richter score with the bleak malevolence of True Detective and the intensity of Breaking Bad. Effective textures and beats are vital, but most importantly, the music should tell the emotional journey of a mother saving her children & moving towards the light.

I imagine three potential musical characters -

  1. Jessica - her relationship to her children & continued journey towards redemption (the apple metaphor)
  2. Past - Rob's attempt to drag her back down & Sammy's full manifestation of evil
  3. Struggle - an intense, grim survival to protect her children & her soul

All three musical characters should interplay as the tension mounts.

I wrote, produced, and originally recorded all of the music in this pitch. Taken from a variety of projects, it may not always be a perfect match, but shows how I'd approach it. Working with the creatives to define the sound in the demo process would of course help focus it down.
